What makes a good website?

What makes a good website? A successful web site offers easy navigation, encourages site exploration, keeps visitors engaged, invites visitors to return, and keeps them entertained. Research of browsing patterns and an understanding the website's visitors helps us create good websites.

Visitors spend three seconds on average on a new webpage. A website should engage and involve the visitor to start reading and exploring the information during this short period of time. On the websites you've visited, what have you noticed about them that has kept you interested? Can you summarize what makes a website good or bad for you?

Is the look of the web site important when you're browsing a website or making your decision about dealing with a company, or not? Beautiful and professional-looking websites indicate they aren’t a scam site, contain quality content, and are generally worth your time. Poorly designed websites are the exact opposite – they may turn on the red flag of a scam, as well as indicate carelessness. Have you ever made a decision about a company based on their web pages or identity design?

Nice article.
A decision is usually based on the design — whether or not it looks professional — but it also depends on what one is visiting the site for & whether expectations are fulfilled.

I made a purchase yesterday from a website that didn't look very pro. It took me a lot longer to make that decision and I almost left the site, but I couldn't find that item any place else. That was the only reason I used that site. Yes, design does make a difference. It makes me feel safer to use a merchant with well design website.

What criteria do you use to differentiate a professional looking design from amateur?
